Gibson’s Apple Pie Old Fashioned

I don’t drink a lot, but when I do have a cocktail, I want to sip on something FABULOUS. Gibson’s Apple Pie Old Fashioned is amazing! It’s my new favorite fall cocktail, and it’s perfectly sippable. I love using Gibson’s Finest Rare 12-Year-Old Whisky, but you can use your favorite whisky in this cocktail.

If you’re a whisky fan, you’ve probably had an old fashioned cocktail a time or two. This tasty twist blends apple cider with a wee pinch of apple pie spice that adds rich, fall flavor to the drink. It’s smooth, not too sweet, and is perfect for sharing.

I’m going to share this cocktail with friends and family at Thanksgiving. I’ll make up a pitcher full of the mix, and then let people pour and add garnishes to their own glasses. This’ll cut down on the amount of work I have to do, and who doesn’t love tasty garnishes with a great cocktail? Be sure to see my list of garnishes below.

Grab your bottle of Gibson’s Whisky or your favorite label, and sip on something delicious today!

How to Make Gibson’s Apple Pie Old Fashioned

  1. Chill your rocks glass by filling it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail.
  2. Pour the whisky, apple cider, simple syrup, bitters, and a pinch of apple pie spice into a shaker filled with ice.
  3. Stir the mixture gently for about 15-20 seconds to blend the flavors and chill the drink.
  4. Empty the ice water from your chilled glass and add a large ice cube.
  5. Strain the cocktail into the glass over the fresh ice.
  6. Garnish with two apple slices, either on the rim of the glass or floating gently in the drink.
  7. Serve and enjoy your Gibson’s Apple Pie Old Fashioned!

Step-By-Step Process

Tips for Making the Perfect Old Fashioned

  • Make sure your apple cider is fresh and preferably unfiltered for the best flavor. The cloudy texture adds a little extra depth to the drink.
  • If you want a little more warmth, you can sprinkle a bit of extra apple pie spice on top of the drink before serving.
  • To give your drink a smoky twist, try using smoked apple slices or even torching the apple pie spice slightly before mixing it in.
  • Use a large ice cube (or “king cube”) to keep your drink cold without watering it down too much.

How to garnish your Apple Pie Old Fashioned Cocktail

Here are some optional garnishes you and your guests may love with your cocktail:

  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Orange peel or twists
  • Dehydrated apple slices
  • Star anise
  • Clove-studded orange slices
  • Rosemary sprigs
  • Luxardo Cherries or brandied cherries

Serving Suggestions

This cocktail pairs beautifully with savory fall dishes. Try serving it alongside roasted pork with apples or roasted chicken with a spiced apple chutney. The crispness of the apple cider and the warmth of the spices make it a perfect companion to any autumn meal, especially those that feature roasted meats and root vegetables.

Storage

If you’re preparing for a gathering, you can pre-mix the whisky, cider, and simple syrup ahead of time and store it in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Just stir the mixture well before serving and add the bitters and spice right before shaking it up. Pre-batching it will save you time if you’re making it for a crowd!
