Ranch Snack Mix Recipe: Buttery, Crunchy Baked Party Mix

This Ranch Snack Mix is inspired by the overpriced boutique snack mixes that you can buy in the South. Sometimes called cocktail crackers or cocktail mixes, this one is crazy easy to make and will cost you a fraction of the price. I love it this way, with ranch dressing powder doing must of the flavoring, and of course, oodles of butter!

I make this snack mix for game day, potlucks, or anytime I need a treat that holds up in a bowl for hours without going stale. The trick is baking it low and slow instead of just tossing seasoning over cold crackers. Low heat toasts everything evenly and bakes the butter in, instead of leaving it greasy on top.

Chef Jenn’s Take on Ranch Butter Snack Mix

Most snack mixes taste greasy on the outside and bland everywhere else. That happens when the butter goes in unseasoned, or the mix goes into a hot oven that scorches the seasoning before the crackers even crisp up.

I don’t have a fussy trick here, just patience. Low oven, frequent stirs, a full cool before it goes anywhere near a container.

I keep the oven at 250°F and stir every 8 to 10 minutes so every piece, oyster cracker, cereal square, pretzel, and saltine, gets an even coat and toasts instead of burning. Melting the ranch seasoning right into the butter matters too. Sprinkling it on dry crackers leaves clumps and bare spots. Melting it into the butter first means every piece gets the same hit of ranch, garlic, and dill.

What You’ll Love About Ranch Butter Snack Mix

  • I mix four different textures into this bowl, oyster crackers, cereal squares, mini pretzels, and saltines, so you get crunch and snap in the same handful instead of one note the whole time.
  • This is the one I set out for game day or a potluck when I want people snacking without me standing over a dip refilling it every twenty minutes.
  • The ranch seasoning melts right into the butter instead of getting sprinkled on dry, so every piece gets the same hit of flavor, not just the ones sitting at the bottom of the bowl.

Ingredients

Bowls of butter, mini saltine crackers, mini pretzels, wheat Chex, oyster crackers, and small dishes of spices and dry ranch seasoning on a marble surface.
  • Unsalted butter – Use unsalted so you control the salt level with the seasoning packet.
  • Dry ranch seasoning packet – Any dry ranch dressing mix works here.
  • Dried dill weed – Skip it if you don’t have it, the ranch seasoning already carries dill flavor.
  • Garlic powder – Don’t sub garlic salt, it will oversalt the mix.
  • Onion powder – A pinch of onion salt works in a pinch, just cut the added pepper slightly.
  • Dried chili flakes – Leave out for a milder mix, or double it if you like heat.
  • Black pepper – Freshly ground is better here, pre-ground tastes flat once baked.
  • Oyster crackers – Plain, unsalted-top ones work best if your store carries them.
  • Wheat Chex – Any bite-sized wheat cereal square works.
  • Mini pretzels – Twists or sticks both work, whatever you have.
  • Mini saltine crackers – Regular saltines work too, just break them into large pieces first.

Start the oven at 250°F and line two large sheet pans with parchment or nonstick foil. Low heat is the whole point here. It toasts the mix instead of scorching the seasoning before the crackers even crisp.

Bowls of butter, crackers, pretzels, cereal, oyster crackers, flour, and small dishes of spices are arranged on a marble countertop.

Melt the butter, then stir the ranch seasoning, dill, garlic powder, onion powder, chili flakes, and black pepper right into the liquid butter. Melting it in means the seasoning coats evenly instead of clumping on top later.

Combine the oyster crackers, cereal squares, mini pretzels, and broken saltines in your biggest mixing bowl. Go bigger than you think you need. A crowded bowl makes even coating harder.

Pour the seasoned butter over the mix and toss with your hands, not a spoon. Your hands get into the bottom of the bowl where a spoon leaves dry spots.

Spread the coated mix in a thin, even layer across both prepared sheet pans. Don’t pile it up. A thick layer steams instead of toasting.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring every 8 to 10 minutes so every side gets time facing up. Pull it when it looks lightly toasted and smells like garlic and dill, not when it looks fully browned. It keeps crisping as it cools.

Let the mix cool completely on the pans before you touch it. It firms up and crisps as it cools. Warm mix straight from the oven will taste soft, not crunchy.

Make It A Meal

I put this mix out next to a few other regulars when I’m feeding a crowd. Try it alongside Creamy Jalapeno Dip if you want something with more heat, or Spinach & Brie Dip if the room wants something rich instead of crunchy.

For a bigger spread, I’ll add Smoked Garlic Parmesan Wings and Tomato Bruschetta so there’s a fresh, lighter bite on the table alongside all those richer, savory snacks.

Storage

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. If it loses its crunch, spread it on a sheet pan and warm at 250°F for 5 to 10 minutes, then cool completely before serving again. This one doesn’t hold up well in the freezer, the crackers and pretzels go soft once thawed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my snack mix turn out soggy instead of crunchy?

It usually means the mix went into a container before it fully cooled. It also happens if the layer on the pan was too thick to dry out evenly. Spread it thin before baking, and let it cool thoroughly on the pan.

Can I double this recipe for a crowd?

Yes. Use more pans and bake in batches rather than crowding one pan, so everything still toasts instead of steaming. Doubling the seasoned butter and tossing in batches keeps the coating even.

Is this snack mix spicy?

Not really, as written. The chili flakes give a light background heat, not a real kick. Leave them out for a mild mix or double them if you want more heat.

Notes

Recipe Card Tips

  • Melt the ranch seasoning into the butter rather than sprinkling it on dry crackers. Sprinkling leaves in bare spots and clumps.
  • Let the mix cool completely in the pan before storing. It firms up and crisps as it cools; the warm mix still feels soft.
  • Bake at 250°F, not higher. A hotter oven browns the seasoning before the crackers underneath finish crisping.
