What You’ll Love about Sweet & Spicy Smoked Pineapple

  • It’s crazy easy to make!
  • Make it as spicy as you like!
  • Smoked pineapple is excellent as a side dish or dessert!

I’m a pellet miser. There, I admit it. When I fire up my smoker – a big Traeger – I have to use every inch of space to make use of all that glorious smoke. And, more often than not, pineapple is taking up some of that space.

You can smoke the pineapple at just about any temperature. Cook it low and for a bit longer, or pop it on a hotter smoker and cook it for a short time – the choice is yours!

Ridiculously easy and so gosh darn tasty, smoked pineapple is too good not to have at every meal!

Ingredients

Smoked pineapple ingredients labeled.
  • Pineapples – I use 2 pineapples, but you could easily half or double the recipe.
  • Brown sugar – Just regular light/golden brown sugar.
  • Cinnamon – Ground cinnamon.
  • Chipotle powder – Adds smoky heat.

How To Make The Best Smoked Pineapple

Start by preheating your smoker to 250°F. I like using fruit woods like apple or cherry for smoked pineapple because they complement the sweetness of the fruit without overpowering it.

Cut the top and bottom off the pineapples using a sharp chef’s knife. Stand the pineapple upright and carefully slice away the outer skin. Cut the pineapple lengthwise around the core to create long spears.

In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, and chipotle powder until evenly mixed.

Pineapple cut into spears and a bowl of spice rub.

Place the pineapple spears in a large mixing bowl and toss them with the brown sugar mixture until all sides are evenly coated.

Arrange the pineapple spears directly onto the smoker grates, leaving a little space between each piece so the smoke can circulate evenly.

Smoke the pineapple at 250°F for about 40 minutes, or until the brown sugar melts into a glossy glaze and the pineapple is fully heated through and slightly caramelized around the edges.

Serve warm or chilled.

Smoked until glossy and hot.

Chef Jenn’s Tips

  • Smoke the pineapple at 350-F for about 15 minutes or 225-F for about 50-60 minutes. You want the glaze to be glossy and the pineapple to be heated through.
  • This Sweet and Spicy Smoked Pineapple recipe calls for 1 teaspoon of chipotle powder, which gives the pineapple a bit of a kick. Chipotle powder can be spicy! Go easy with it until you know how spicy you like it.

Variations

  • Want a stronger sugar flavor? Try using dark brown sugar instead of light brown sugar.
  • No chipotle powder? Cayenne will also work or try jalapeno powder.
  • Don’t like the spice? Skip it! The brown sugar and cinnamon are a delightful combination with the pineapple!

Make It A Meal

Smoked pineapple goes so well with Mexican and tropical flavors. Serve it with smoked chicken or turkey, or pair it with a delicious tomahawk steak. I also love just snacking on the pineapple, along with fun appetizers like smoked salsa, queso, or bullet shells. This is also a fabulous dessert! Serve your smoked pineapple warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side! Yum!

Storage

Smoked pineapple is best eaten fresh, but it will keep for 2-3 days in the fridge. Seal it in an airtight container and gobble it up within a day or two. It is delicious cold, or warm it up in the microwave.

What Kind Of Pellets Do You Need To Smoke Pineapple

Any kind! This is such a quick smoke that any pellets will work. I usually have a good pellet hardwood blend on hand for jobs like this.
