What You Need To Make Decorated New Year’s Eve Cookies

  • Parchment paper
  • Fork
  • Culinary tongs – so very helpful if you’ve got shaky hands!
  • Oreo cookies – or other sandwich cookies
  • White chocolate – see notes below
  • Coconut oil – if you’re using white chocolate, melting wafers don’t need coconut oil
  • Various sprinkles & edible decorations

White Chocolate – What You Need To Know

Not all white chocolate is the same, and for making these cookies, you don’t need to splurge on the super gourmet white chocolate.

For cookies like this, my favorite “white chocolate” is the white chocolate melting wafers. It’s not really white chocolate at all, but it’s designed to coat and form a hard shell without tempering (bringing the chocolate to a certain temperature so that it forms a shell when cooled.)

You can find these melting wafters at craft stores in the baking section, or even in large supermarkets. They’re also much harder to mess up, unlike temperamental white chocolate which needs to be melted in a double boiler.

For this recipe, you’ll need about 1.5 ounces of white chocolate or candy coating per 8 cookies.

Melt the white chocolate wafers according to the instructions. They usually melt well in the microwave at medium power in 30 second intervals until smooth.

Dip the cookies into the candy coating or white chocolate and place them on parchment paper to set. A fork works well here. I use it to balance the cookie, dip it into the coating, and let the excess drip off.

A metal ladle holds a thick, creamy white liquid over a glass bowl, with some of the liquid dripping back into the bowl.

While the coating is still wet, add the decorations. Use larger sprinkles to mark the hours and smaller sprinkles for the minutes.

Chef Jenn’s Tips

  • Parchment paper is essential – the chocolate/candy coating will stick to nearly everything else making the hardened cookies difficult to remove. Do yourself a favor and use parchment paper (not waxed paper).
  • If your chocolate/candy coating gets thick, heat it up a bit to smooth it out.
  • Use a variety of sandwich cookies – chocolate or vanilla Oreos are my favorties.
  • Get the kids involved – everyone loves decorating cookies!

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will decorated cookies keep?

Keep your cookies in an airtight container on the counter or in a cool spot (not the fridge as the chocolate coating can get condensation on it when coming to room temperature) for about a week.

What sprinkles do I use to decorate holiday cookies?

I love using bright, metallic colors for these cookies. And, you can even spread some icing on the top of the cookies to change up the color of the “clock face”.

Are decorated cookies hard to make?

Not at all! Just gather the ingredients, set up your work area, and have fun decorating! The options are limited only by your imagination!
