Salad dressings are so much better when made from scratch, and this homemade Russian Dressing is no exception! Made with fresh, quality ingredients, there’s flavor in every bite. It’s amazing as a salad dressing, but it’s also terrific on sandwiches (Reuben sandwich, anyone?), and it’s a delicious dip for veggies, nuggets, grilled shrimp, and more.

Plus, when you make it from scratch, you can control the ingredients and the spice level. Want it spicier? Add a pinch of cayenne or chipotle pepper (or more hot sauce) to amp it up a bit. For even more flavor, make it with homemade mayonnaise, or use a good-quality store-bought brand.

What you’ll love about Russian Dressing

  • It’s thick, creamy, tangy, and a bit spicy!
  • There’s so much more flavor compared to store-bought.
  • It’s not just for salads!

Thousand Island Dressing VS. Russian Dressing

If you’ve ever made Thousand Island salad dressing, you’ll see similar ingredients in this Russian Dressing. But, there are a few key differences. Primarily is the use of horseradish in Russian salad dressing. Horseradish gives it a bit of texture and a spicy kick that really enlivens the dressing. The second main difference is that traditional Thousand Island dressing is made with chopped egg that acts as a binder. There’s no egg in Russian dressing.

Ingredients

  • Mayonnaise
  • Chili sauce – You can also use ketchup (just don’t tell me).
  • Sour cream – Full or lower fat; your choice.
  • Horseradish – You want prepared horseradish, not horseradish sauce.
  • Lemon juice – From a fresh lemon.
  • Worcestershire sauce – Pull the bottle out from the back of the fridge! It’s a must-have for Russian salad dressing.
  • Paprika
  • Pickles – Use tangy dill pickles.
  • Shallot – Finely shopped.
  • Hot sauce – Use your favorite brand.

  1. Finely chop the shallot and pickle.
  2. Mix everything together in a small bowl.
  3. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, then serve and enjoy!

What Is Chili Sauce?

Chili sauce is a popular condiment that’s a lot like a spicier, more savory ketchup. It’s made with tomato and has a fair bit of sugar in it, but it’s also got spicy chili peppers, celery, bell peppers, and plenty of spices in it. The flavor is deep and rich, but not particularly spicy. It isn’t as spicy as a hot sauce.

Chef Jenn’s Tips

  • I prefer to hand chop the pickles and shallot but you can pulse them in a food processor until they’re chopped.
  • Use super-fresh sour cream to keep your dressing fresh for more than a few days.
  • No shallots? Use some finely chopped sweet onion instead, or the white parts of green onions.
  • Can’t find chili sauce? Use ketchup instead.

How To Use Russian Dressing

Of course you can top your favorite salad with Russian Dressing, but you can use this tasty dressing as a sauce, spread, and dip. Serve it with chopped veggies, chicken nuggets, grilled fish or shrimp, or use it on your favorite Reuben sandwich. Pair your delish salad with a meal of this classic Linguini Bolognese!

Storage

If your sour cream is super fresh, this salad dressing will keep in the fridge for a week if it’s tightly covered.
